FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
23 September 2003, by: 1001buku Media
Dear new volunteers, Mbak (sister), Mas (old brother), Ade (young brother/sister), om (uncle) and tante (auntie). Welcome to 1001buku!
The following are some questions frequently asked by those who are new to 1001buku. You ask us and we give you the answer!
NEW VOLUNTEER: How can I join 1001buku?
1001buku: To join 1001buku and become a volunteer, the first thing to do is joining 1001buku?s mailing list. You can do this by sending a blank e-mail to 1001buku-subscribe@yahoogroups.com. You can also subscribe via yahoo groups website by logging on to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/1001buku (you?re going to need a Yahoo ID for this).
NEW VOLUNTEER: Done it. Now, what can I do for 1001buku?
1001buku: You can do a lot for this community. Basically you only need to spare a little of your time, thought and energy for PASANG BODY at 1001buku activities.
NEW VOLUNTEER: PASANG BODY? Hmm, what does that mean? Never heard it before?
1001buku: PASANG BODY is our term for anyone?s willingness to participate either directly or indirectly in any activities conducted by 1001buku.
NEW VOLUNTEER: I?m good at driving, you know. I used to be a bus driver. Will that be helpful?
1001buku: Absolutely. Your skill will be of great help, especially for distributing the collected books which have been through the sorting and packaging process during SPD activity. Those books need to be delivered to the independent libraries listed in Perpustakaan Jaringan 1001buku (1001buku network libraries). By delivering the books, you are at the same time doing the task of checking on the existence of the registered library. Otherwise you can use your skill to pick up the children books which have been donated by book donors at BDB locations and take them to the next SPD.
NEW VOLUNTEER: Wait. What is SPD activity?
1001buku: SPD stands for book Sorting, Packing, and Distributing. It?s a monthly activity in which 1001buku volunteers get together to sort the books received at BDB locations, list them down and pack them so that they are ready to be distributed to libraries in Perpustakaan Jaringan 1001buku based on their need and request.
NEW VOLUNTEER: You?ve been talking about BDB. Just what exactly is this BDB?
1001buku: BDB or Book Drop Boxes is what we call the boxes which 1001buku volunteers have put in strategic locations. BDB locations are spread out from North Sumatra, North Sulawesi, Yogyakarta, East Java, Middle Java, to Jabotabek and Bandung. The purpose of these boxes is so that anyone can have easy access to give their donation to children libraries. Every BDB is managed by one or more volunteers who work or live in the area where the BDB is located. The BDB network is managed wholly by 1001buku volunteers.
NEW VOLUNTEER: I am a former secretary to Pak Camat (head of district). I have an excellent writing style. Is there anything I can do for 1001buku?
1001buku: Sure. This kind of skill of yours will be very useful for helping us to list the books picked up from BDB sites, put 1001buku stamp on them and arrange a distribution list. Your help will allow the book donors gain information of where their donated books are distributed to.
NEW VOLUNTEER: I am a very busy person. You see, I am a politician and a member of DPR (House of Representatives), one of the representatives of X Party. I don?t think I have the time to join any SPD activities, moreover an SPD done in Depok. What can I do for 1001buku, then?
1001buku: Gee, been busy thinking about the people, huh? Well, you can contribute your thought, idea, or suggestion to make 1001buku better and better. Perhaps you?d like to give suggestion about the articles. In that case, you can talk to Bung (Mr.) Remon and discuss your ideas. You can also give comments about how we could collect a whole lot more books at BDB locations, or any other ideas.
NEW VOLUNTEER: What if I?m anak gaul (a highly sociable person)?
1001buku: Anak gaul? Wow, you must have a lot of friends. So why don?t you ask your friends to set up a BDB post at your favorite hangout? That way, we will have a lot more people to donate children books/magazines and toys. You can also tell your friends about 1001buku activities and ask them to join in? or you can help Bang (brother) Wien?s GPK team. One of this team?s tasks is to raise fund, for example by selling 1001buku t-shirts and pins. You can sell them to your friends. Don?t worry about getting embarrassed of the merchandise since the t-shirts and pins are fancy, totally fine if you want to wear them for clubbing.
NEW VOLUNTEER: Err, what is GPK? You?re not talking about that notorious Gerakan Pengacau Keamanan (security obstruction movement), right?
1001buku: Of course not! We in 1001buku love peace. GPK is merely our unique call for Gerakan Promosi dan Kampanye (campaign and promotion team). Its works include creating & imposing campaign programs and maintaining excellent relationship with media both internal and institutional. This team can be divided into sub-departments: Media & Institutional Relations department, Campaign department and Internal Relations department.
NEW VOLUNTEER: I am a photographer, and my girlfriend/boyfriend is an ace in computer.
1001buku: Very well, you can help us take pictures of our activities. Go ask your girlfriend/boyfriend to join in 1001buku too and help the 1001buku-IT team.
NEW VOLUNTEER: What about the senior volunteers? Are they conceited? I heard from my other sociable friend, people related to books are simply nerds and very proud of themselves.
1001buku: Oh, oh, you got it all wrong. Neither of 1001buku volunteers is conceited. If your email has not been replied, please be patient. They may not have the time to reply your email because they are busy at the time. If you still get no reply, please send another and another until you get the reply.
Talking about 1001buku volunteers, they are far from being nerds and overly proud of themselves. They are wild and crazy! If you don?t believe it, why don?t you come to an SPD and prove it yourself. Thus, there?s no need to be afraid, shy, or doubtful to join us. One more thing: Crazy and wild we may seem, but we always have our activity completely done. The success of the launching of 1001buku is one proof. It?s all made possible, thanks to the good work of the dedicated 1001buku volunteers, who may have a little time, energy, and ideas, but still remain FOCUSED, HIGHLY SPIRITED and maintain GOOD TEAM WORK.
NEW VOLUNTEER: Is it still okay for me to set up another BDB? If yes, how can I do that?
1001buku: Of course, if you think you are capable of managing a BDB, why not give it a try? Just visit http://www.1001buku.org/index.php/English/Join%20Us/159.html to find the detailed explanation about setting up a BDB.
NEW VOLUNTEER: I think I?ll just give away something. So what does 1001buku expect to receive from me? Where can I deliver my donation?
1001buku: Children?s books, magazines, and other reading materials ? either new or used ? are mostly welcome. Toys are also welcome because we believe they nurture children?s creativity. You can bring your donation to the nearest BDB location.
NEW VOLUNTEER: The idea of children library fascinates me. I?d like to visit one to know what it?s like. Perhaps you can give me an address of a children library you are familiar of?
1001buku: As a matter of fact we organize a network of independent children libraries. We call the network PERPUSTAKAAN JARINGAN 1001BUKU (1001buku network libraries). Please visit our website to find the complete address of the members of the network libraries.
NEW VOLUNTEER: Psst, I heard members of Perpustakaan Jaringan 1001buku were entitled to receive children book donations from 1001buku. It made me interested to enroll my library to the network libraries. What should I do to put my library on the list?
1001buku: Firstly, you need to know the requirements you must meet in order to make your library a member of the Perpustakaan Jaringan 1001buku. If you think your library has all it takes to meet the requirements, then you may proceed by firstly joining 1001buku (see detailed explanation above). Next, contact our register Ambar (stopaskingmyid@yahoo.com) to enroll your library. Do not forget to mention your contact email address that we can publish at the 1001buku website. Ambar will then send you a registration form for you to fill, and you will get a visit later on from the 1001buku Library division. It?s easy, isn?t it? What? You are still at a loss? Take it easy. For more details, you may contact Rini (rinia@sucofindo.co.id) and she will give you answers to all your questions about Perpustakaan Jaringan 1001buku. Good luck!
Guess that?s all there is to it. Just keep your eye on 1001buku mailing list (1001buku@yahoogroups.com) and you will find out more about 1001buku and its activities and volunteers. Once again, welcome to 1001buku, dear new volunteers!
